What an Interlock® aluminum roof is
An Interlock® roof is made of interlocking aluminum panels, each locked to its neighbours on all four sides with the fasteners concealed under the panel above. Nothing is screwed through the weather surface. The panels are stamped to look like slate, cedar shingle, shake or tile.
The panels are made in Canada by Interlock Roofing at its plant in Delta, BC. In Alberta they are installed by our own company, Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd., founded in 1999, from our office in Calgary, which serves both Calgary and Edmonton.

Why aluminum, for an Alberta roof
It doesn't rust
Aluminum forms a thin oxide film that blocks further oxidation (ASM International). There is no steel inside an aluminum panel for melt water or a scratch to reach, so there is no red rust at cut edges or fastener holes.
Chinooks and freeze-thaw
A chinook can take a roof from deep cold to a thaw and back within days, many times a winter. Asphalt and wood take on water that freezes and thaws; aluminum absorbs none, so there is nothing in the panel for freeze-thaw to open up.
Wind
The panels lock on all four sides with no tabs for a gust to lift. Wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification.
Snow, and how light it is
Smooth aluminum sheds snow rather than holding it, so we plan snow guards over entries, decks and driveways at the estimate. The panels weigh roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre, a fraction of concrete tile or natural slate.
Hail, the Alberta question
The Insurance Bureau of Canada describes an unofficial "Hail Alley" running from High River, just south of Calgary, north into central Alberta, and says Alberta has had at least one major hailstorm every year for two decades. The June 13, 2020 Calgary hailstorm, with hail the size of tennis balls, caused almost $1.2 billion in insured damage, then the costliest hailstorm in Canadian history, and Environment and Climate Change Canada ranked it the country's top weather story of 2020; the August 5, 2024 Calgary storm is now estimated at $3.25 billion, the second-costliest insured disaster in Canadian history (IBC, citing CatIQ).
Interlock's Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake and Mediterranean Tile aluminum panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, listed by Intertek under Delta Building Products. That is a test rating, not a promise: no roof is immune to hail, very large hail can dent aluminum, and the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty excludes hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in) along with severe weather. Hail damage is a home insurance matter. Ask your insurer how it treats an impact-rated roof; we give you the listing details and both warranty documents.
The profiles, and what Alberta homeowners choose
Five aluminum profiles: Slate (by far the most popular), Cedar Shingle, Shake, Mediterranean Tile and Standing Seam, plus solid copper for bays, porches and accents. Nine colours: Solid Copper, Copper Penny, Hunter Green, Black, Deep Charcoal, Musket Grey, Tile Red, Colonial Brown and Tudor Brown. Every profile needs a minimum 3/12 slope.
In our Alberta job book the most common profiles are Slate (20) and the legacy Interlock Shingle (3). The legacy Interlock Shingle is an earlier profile, no longer made; today's choices are the five above.
What you get in writing

- 30 Year Alunar® Coating Warranty on the finish.
- 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty from Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd. on our installation (Alberta Form 5290).
- Wind resistance warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification.
- Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly: two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood, per ASTM E108. FireSmart Alberta recommends Class A fire-rated roofing.
How a roof gets done
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1. Consultation | On Zoom or at your home, anywhere in Alberta. We go through profiles and colours, look at photos of roofs like yours, and answer questions. |
| 2. Measure and inspect | We measure the roof and check what's on it now. Cedar, concrete tile and natural slate always come off; a single layer of asphalt can be roofed over only if the inspection finds it suitable. |
| 3. Fixed price in writing | Anything the inspection finds goes into the written quote before you sign, not into a change order later. |
| 4. Installation | Our own Alberta installers, to the manufacturer's specification, with flashing, ventilation and snow guards as planned. |
| 5. Warranties registered | The Guardian material warranty and our labour warranty, with our Alberta service team after the job. |

Questions, answered
Who installs aluminum roofing in Alberta?
Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd. installs the Interlock® aluminum roofing system across Alberta from its office at 210, 3750 46 Ave SE, Calgary. The company was founded in 1999 and installs every roof itself. Call (587) 317-6517.
Is aluminum roofing good for Alberta winters and chinooks?
Aluminum doesn't rust and absorbs no water, so the freeze-thaw that comes with chinooks has nothing to work on, and its smooth surface sheds snow. Ice dams are a different matter: they come from heat loss into the attic and from ventilation, no roof stops them on its own, and ice damming is a stated exclusion of the material warranty. We look at ventilation and insulation with you.
Is an aluminum roof better than a steel roof?
They are both metal roofs, but steel depends on its zinc or aluminum-zinc coating to keep from rusting, and aluminum has no steel to rust. Aluminum is also about a third the weight. Steel roofing usually costs less up front. Our steel vs aluminum guide sets out the differences.
How much does an aluminum roof cost in Alberta?
It depends on the roof's area, pitch and complexity, what comes off, and the profile. Our metal roof cost page shows real price ranges from our own recent Alberta contracts; your own price is fixed in writing after one free visit.
Can an aluminum roof go over my asphalt shingles?
Sometimes: a single layer of asphalt can be roofed over only if our inspection finds it suitable. Cedar shakes, concrete tile and natural slate always come off first.
How long does an aluminum roof last?
Aluminum has been known to last over 100 years. That is a property of the metal, not a promise; what you get in writing is the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty, the 30 Year Alunar® Coating Warranty and our 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty.
